Kenton Youth gets off to a flying start

There was a real buzz around The Kenton as our brand new Kenton Youth programme got underway, welcoming two groups of young people into the theatre for their first sessions.

Designed to introduce young people to the whole world of theatre, not just performing on stage, Kenton Youth gives participants the chance to explore everything from acting, singing and movement to lighting, sound, stage management, costume, make-up, scriptwriting and design.

And judging by the first week, they are already throwing themselves into it.

The young people began by exploring the theatre itself, including a trip up to the fly tower and into the tech box, giving them a glimpse behind the scenes and the chance to discover how a working theatre comes to life.

Education Manager Alice Brown, who leads the programme alongside Lead Facilitator Lottie Crowder, told the Henley Herald that the programme has deliberately been designed to be as varied as possible, with workshops this term including stage combat, special effects make-up, puppetry, musical theatre and pantomime.

More than performing

One of the things that makes Kenton Youth different is its focus on the huge variety of roles and skills that exist across the theatre industry.

Young people will get hands-on experience in technical theatre, creative production and performance, with visiting industry professionals helping them explore different pathways along the way.

There will also be opportunities to take part in community events including Kenton Carols, enjoy a group theatre trip to the pantomime and work towards an optional Arts Award qualification.

The Junior group can work towards Arts Award Explore, while eligible Senior participants can take on Bronze Arts Award, developing their creativity, communication skills and confidence as they progress through the programme.

A place to belong

The first session was also about something much simpler: making friends, trying something new and feeling at home in the theatre.

Theatre Manager Lottie Pheasant said the aim of Kenton Youth is to give local young people somewhere they can “build confidence, be creative and feel part of the theatre.”

That ambition sits at the heart of Kenton Youth. Whether a young person dreams of performing, wants to discover what happens backstage or simply wants to try something creative in a welcoming environment, there is a place for them here.

Junior places still available

There are currently three places available in the Junior group, for young people in Years 5 and 6.

Junior sessions take place on Mondays from 5pm to 6pm at The Kenton.

No audition is required and no previous theatre experience is needed.

There is also one fully funded bursary place available, helping ensure cost does not prevent a young person from taking part. Bursary applications for this academic year close on Wed 30 Sep.
