It’s New Year’s Eve in Vienna, 1899. A now married Rosalinde, is serenaded by her old beau Alfred. Her maid Adele tries to get the night off but is refused. Her husband, Gabriel, is sentenced to eight days in gaol but is persuaded to go the extravagant masked ball being held by the wealthy Prince Orlofsky instead of starting his term … and thus the scene is set.
