Dennis Oliver appointed Chair of The Kenton Theatre

The Kenton Theatre has announced the appointment of Dennis Oliver as Chair for the next year, as the theatre builds on a period of improved financial performance, growing community engagement and continued investment in its future.

Dennis joined The Kenton’s Board of Trustees in August 2023. He previously worked for a US multinational, holding board positions across engineering, finance and general management.

He is passionate about keeping local communities strong and ensuring important local amenities are placed on a sound financial footing so they can thrive into the future.

His appointment comes as The Kenton reports a positive year of progress. At the theatre’s Annual General Meeting, Members heard that the charity recorded a surplus of £5,000 for the financial year to August 2025, compared with a deficit of £32,000 the previous year.

Trading income increased from £645,000 in 2024 to £812,000 in 2025.

The theatre was in use for 229 days during 2025, including 105 programme show and pantomime days, 98 discounted hire days and 26 commercial hire days.

A major highlight was the success of Peter Pan, which became The Kenton’s most successful pantomime to date. The production sold 8,883 tickets across 41 performances, achieved 90% occupancy and generated £176,000 in ticket revenue. The pantomime made a profit of £45,500 and represented around 35% of overall programmed ticket revenue.

Dennis Oliver, Chair of The Kenton Theatre, said:

“I’m delighted to be taking on the role of Chair and hope I can build on the progress made by my predecessor and everyone involved with The Kenton.

“The progress made over the last three years gives us a solid base to build from. We have strong processes in place and an exceptional team of staff, trustees and volunteers.

“My priorities for the year ahead are to continue improving the theatre’s financial sustainability, ensure the successful implementation of Kenton Youth and move forward with the development of the Kenton Restoration Project.

“The Kenton is the jewel in Henley’s cultural crown. It brings entertainment to the town, gives people of all ages the chance to explore their creativity and creates a real community within a community.”

Theatre Manager Lottie Pheasant said:

“The Kenton has made real progress over the past year, and Dennis takes on the role of Chair at an exciting point for the theatre.

“We have a strong programme, a committed team of staff and volunteers, growing community engagement and some very exciting plans ahead. Dennis brings extensive experience across business, finance and leadership, as well as a real commitment to strong local communities.

“I am looking forward to working closely with him and the Board as we continue to build a strong and sustainable future for The Kenton.”

Community groups continue to play a central role in the theatre’s programme, representing around 43% of activity. The theatre continues to support groups through discounted hire fees and technical costs, with ongoing support from Henley Town Council.

The Kenton’s volunteer programme now includes more than 120 volunteers, with a new Volunteer Forum, annual volunteer survey and reward and recognition scheme introduced as part of the programme’s continued development.

The year ahead will also see the launch of Kenton Youth in September 2026.

The new theatre education programme will give young people aged nine to 16 the opportunity to explore all aspects of theatre. Funded bursary places are available, and students will have the option to complete Arts Award, accredited by Trinity College London.

The Kenton is now an official Arts Award Centre.

Lottie added:

“Kenton Youth is about inspiring the next generation through theatre. We want young people to see The Kenton as somewhere they belong and somewhere they can explore their creativity, build confidence and discover opportunities both on stage and behind the scenes.”

Building investment also remains a major priority. Recent and ongoing capital projects include an £88,000 stage lighting system and a £22,000 fire alarm system, both supported by external funders and supporters.

The theatre is also working with OMBA on a comprehensive future vision plan for the building, supporting its long term preservation and development.

Dennis will serve as Chair for the next year as The Kenton continues its work to strengthen the theatre financially, creatively and as a community asset for Henley and the surrounding area.
